RTTC 10M NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS - Keswick - 3rd Sept 2017

52nd Overall / 2nd in Age Group (National Silver)Not quite Porto Pollensa, but the seafront and early morning views across Morecambe Bay towards the southern fells of the Lake District is still pretty damned good, and a little nostalgic from my younger days - that sighting of the Lakeland Fells is a personal joy, like revisiting old friends

Overnight stay in Heysham, breaking the journey to Keswick for the National 10 TT Champs - stage 2 of racing this weekend. Stage one being my second visit to the fast S Cave 10 course yesterday, in the VTTA 10 "knocking out" a 19-13 underlining my recent 19-11 was no fluke, arguably in less favourable conditions and a little experiment on lower cadence, needs a little work, but the future?

Plan this morning is to take a slow drive (it is memory lane ) to Keswick via the coastal road: Hest Bank, Silverdale, Arnside and then up the Lyth Valley to Windermere over Dunmail passed Grasmere - can't wait, be more fun than the race - as will be the post race refreshment in Keswick with my old mucka Mr Summers 🍺

[April 2019: The National was hugely disappointing, probably should not have done the race the day before, in fact my coach was surprised how "well" I actually did in the National - must admit I was over confident that no one could touch me in my age group, but well done to Chris L he beat me fair and square on the day]

VTTA YORKSHIRE 10M TT - S Cave V718 - 2nd Sept 2017

10th Overall / 7th on Standard
First race after advised by coach Dave Morgan to drop my cadence from the mid 90's to the mid 80's (ultimately by 2019 this got even lower) - checked my Training Peaks efforts and identified that my best training was with the lower cadence, but I race in the mid to high 90's.

Really strange to concentrate on a lower cadence and bigger gear, knocked out a 19-13 for this '10', which was just 2 seconds off my PB....however in retrospect, it is a shame that this was not a handful of races into my new cadence, as I added a good 20w on to my previous output after 3 or so races.

VTTA NATIONAL 25M TT CHAMPS - Newmarket -27th Aug 2017

7th Overall & 7th on Standard
A very early start (up at 4.30am) for this rescheduled National VTTA 25m Champs....overtime, it is clear that I do not race at my best at these really early starts, associated to that my HR is always suppressed - knocked a sub 51 mins but it felt really hard from the start and 7th overall, which at the time was a great result (btw not the race photo!)😉

REALTEAM 25M TT - Hirwaun S Wales - 20th Aug 2017

15th Overall & 2nd on Standard
CIGARS, GRANDMASTER FLASH and THE RAPTOR

"Close, but no cigar" was the immediate and appropriate repost from my Langsett Cycles Race Team boss, Mr Elston on informing him of my rather bitter sweet 25 mile TT personal best at the RealTeam 25 on the fast Neath Valley course in South Wales....and how right was he!

Recording what should be a super pleasing 50min 01secs averaging 30mph but obviously falling agonisingly short of the elite sub 50min club by the closest of margins, but worse still an excruciating 5 seconds short of the long standing National Age record - aaaagh! - a little tidy up at Group (regional) level is the consolation...rather mixed feelings post race

However, there wasn't another second in me, although my overall "numbers" were actually below par for that course, consequently whatever purgatory is, I visited it over those last 6 miles - total guts and strength, no control whatsoever and finished in absolute bits - oh the joy - so a healthier return one day is a necessity in order to redress

Anyhow, personally a great recent turnaround in my season, starting with the 19-11 10mile TT 4 weeks ago - in that regard I have to say a big thanks to the

Raptor (Dan) and Jonny at Watt Shop for the fine tuning and identifying that missing piece of jigsaw that I knew was absent but I struggled to find - cheers boys!

[April 2020: Although a PB in 50-01...I knew that there was something not quite right...my power was down over 20w where I would expect...this led to a friend 'lending' me his coach, John Morgan. John got access to my Training Peaks stats...and recognised firstly that my training was unbalanced, too many of those HIITs...meant I lost my base / strength, which showed on the longer races...hence the low wattage. But also, he recognised that I raced at a high cadence, and suggested I drop it, from mid 90's to mid 80's - this took not many races, but my power went up 20w, essentially using big legs, rather than an emphasis on aerobic output - significant - this was the final piece! I eventually returned to Richard for coaching with a snivelling crawl...and as they say, the rest is history!!]

Also thanks to Garry at GBM Photography for the photo from yesterday's race

Finally, those cycling aficionados may be aware of the controversy concerning the race yesterday - the results have been suspended pending an investigation into the "winner" one Marcin Bialoblocki a Polish pro cyclist, who last year broke the UK best for both the 10m and 25m TT distances - yesterday he bettered his 25m time, but was apparently witnessed racing ON the white line (allegedly) of the dual carriageway between the two lanes - I assume forcing close pass from vehicles on either side of him, gaining huge aero advantages, not to mention the disregard for the safety aspect and the wrath of the long arm of a number of authorities - which could of course impact the future of racing on open roads.....a decision on him by the cycling authorities is imminent - anyhow we all learn by our mistakes, and assuming Marcin is willing to learn, may I suggest in the future as part of his warm up he adds into his motivational playlist - the following track, just as a little reminder, in case he forgets, some wise advice from Grandmaster Flash (not forgetting the Furious Five) although I doubt Mr Flash had cycle racing in mind =>

BARNSLEY CLUB 10M TT - Park Springs - 16th Aug 2017

1st Overall
Well! Third test on SetUp 2 - and smashed it on a windy day too (13-25mph S) - joined the sub 21 club, just…watts up to 338 (again) and won! Please only lost a few seconds compared to 4 weeks ago on return into headwind…

Happy not just with the win tonight but back on track with also joining the exclusive sub 21 min club (how many members is that Daniel T?) for the Barnsley RC 10 TT course at a rather windy Park Springs.....hopefully now Mr Kippax and Mr Ledger I can settle on this one bike position - I will try, honestly!

[April 2020: The new confidence continued, although before Dan and the Mallorca trip...dropped my coach, Richard....was getting so frustrated and disillusioned, the finger got pointed everywhere...so, was 'coaching' myself...some days not knowing exactly what to do...actually did a number of HIIT Tabata intervals...wait for the outcome.....]

RTTC NATIONAL 25M TT CHAMPS - Hirwaun S Wales - 6th Aug 2017

84th Overall & 2nd in Age (National Silver)
National TT 25 Champs - nearly 2 mins slower than 2 weeks ago in today much better conditions, maybe the additional recent tinkering wasn't for the best, jury out especially on the new 58 tooth - or was it simply a bad day at the office?

It's a fine line! Back to the drawing board or not?

[April 2020: Advise by Dan Bigham to get at least a 58 tooth chainring...first time of use was in this race, so not sure if that affected the performance -m but really under performed...perhaps should have trained on it or done a non important race?

Of course I perservered with the 58 tooth, and of course I needed it, if anything a 60 would have been possibly better!!]

REALTEAM 25M TT - Hirwaun S Wales - 23rd July 2017

18th Overall & 3rd on Standard - 50-24 records galore at the time
Aaaagh! How friggin annoying - I think the only rain all day in South Wales was during my race (RealTeam TT 25m) and a tropical deluge at that (those that know "gift hill" will understand) - road was flooded at one point....it was quite awful - the bottom line being it scuppered any chance of a consecutive National Age record missing it by 27 seconds.

I shouldn't complain with a PB though of 50-24 for the 25 miles - few local records "tidied up" again - but should've could've would've - but "I'll be back" - that's just a benchmark! [April 2020: and how right you were!]

All in all, not a bad weekends work - back on track

Reyt, rush now back to Sheffield and a few deserved beers at Tramlines - looking forward to The Coral

YORKSHIRE VTTA 10M TT - S Cave V718 - 22nd July 2017

5th Overall & 3rd on Standard - records galore
STOP PRESS - VTTA 10m S Cave - National Age Record 19-11 - 19-11 Boom!! Stage 1 though....@Langsettrt @Sheffrec_CC @7HillsCC

Strangely, even though it was such a keynote time for me at the time, I have no reports on the day?

[April 2020: Still two years later this is my PB, although my power increased by over 20w since, main reason being that the use of this course was suspended by the authorities...fastest course in the UK for a '10'...power output in this was 334w (typical in 2017) but by 2020 was knocking out near 360w efforts for the same distance]

BARNSLEY ROAD CLUB 10 - Park Springs - 12th July 2017

2nd Overall
Boom! Best race this season possibly…..21-17 (on a good night) but just 25 secs behind Dan Taylor who posted that he achieved his best ever power output for a 10…..

[April 2020:This needs explanation....after the National '50', which was the last of a series of underwhelming results on my new super fast bike, I went to Mallorca for a break. On a group ride met an old Uni pal of Dan Bigham...who told me that he was an aero scientist and based in Derby. and he conducted aero testing at the new velodrome...I contacted Dan on my return, and after a couple of sessions with Dan and Jonny Wale - and with subtle changes to my bike, in the velodrome gained nearly 40 watts...this race was the first test outdoors, followed by my 19-11 on the V718...my season and the following years changed, although there was a another piece to the jigsaw still to come....] 😉

RTTC NATIONAL 50M CHAMPS - Yarm N Yorks - 25th June 2017

43rd Overall & 2nd in Age (National silver)
Still not firing on this new bike, but last race prior to a Mallorca visit, the "full fat" National champs...2nd in age giving me the National silver medal, but Chris Ledger deservedly getting the better....only my 3rd? '50' this, and started off probably too steady...knocked out a 1-52 though, which at this time was ok..

In this year, Dan Bigham (and we are getting very close to his impact on me 😉) cleaned up in all the National Champs...top guy, and amazing athlete 👍

[April 2020: Of course the following year I raced 1-42 for a '50', and my minute man in this was a top vet called Keith Murray, he caught me very early....significant that in 2019 I beat him on actual in the National Vets '15' mile champs....]

FUSION CC 10M TT - Hatfield Woodhouse - 17th June 2017

8th Overall
Tried negative splits, possibly too slow first 1/4 - but good result - 8th but 5 secs from 5th

[April 2020: interesting that is a "good result" by 2020 at age 60, I raced three times on the Hatfield course, in typical weather, and broke 21 mins on each occasion]

Saturday, 10 June 2017

LANCASTER 10M TT - Levens N Lancs - 10th June 2017

13th Overall & 3rd on Standard & 1st O50
image of the facade of levens hall, kendal, and the topiary gardenFancied doing this course as it was in my neck of the woods from growing up in Blackpool (the junior school used to visit Levens Hall, famous for its topiary) also combined with staying over with Pete S in Blackpool after the race and a few beers.

As for the race, a traditional fast course but not with an onshore wind from the Kent estuary....had been playing around with caffeine tablets because of an article in CW....to no affect, so decided to take a handful (600mg) in this race...well, felt bloody odd before the race (overly sweaty) and after the finish line was in a mess over the handle bars...after this I never took anything (the other experiment was beetroot juice shots..all bollix!) unless in a longer race, and needed energy in those....performance wise was average too, although got some cash for 1st O50.

TOUR OF CAMBRIDGESHIRE - "WORLD TRIALS" - 3rd & 4th June 2017

3rd in TT & 13th in Road Race (GF)
A weekend in (fairly sunny Peterborough) for what's becoming a staple on the cycling calendar - the Tour of Cambridgeshire incorporating the UK trials for the World finals, this year in Albi, France.....UCI driven, so whether you have a cynical eye (like me) or not it's not going anywhere.....boasting the largest TT event in the world (riders set off at 20 sec intervals) and on the 2nd day the tens of thousands in the Gran Fondo format from pure race groups to leisure sportive riders.....

The TT (or Chrono) as they call it, is on completely closed roads - 16miles of mainly lanes and villages, quite technical and attritional, a cracking course - recording a time significantly faster than last year (when I was 3rd) and seeing that I'd beaten my two contemporaries that have kept me off the top podium in several National level events, for 5 mins I was as proud as a peacock, thinking I'd won - then discovered there were 4 others in front of me - so 5th with mixed feeling - but more personal progress on a slow starting season (he checks his numbers )....and a piece of tin for being a GB qualifier

The GF was rather secondary for me - so beer, wine and pasta prep was in order on the Sat night - lining up by 1100 the following morning....this GF format is affectively a full on race in every sense (a group of us tried like hell in the first hour to get away, unsuccessfully) - main difference being there are several other race groups on the road too (youngest set off first) - regularly catching fairly sizeable groups did get occasionally "messy" - and friggin annoying ("show respect!!") - anyhow entered the last 10km in a approx 30 strong peloton, aggressively getting myself into the first 5 hitting the last 400m, feeling strong - went for glory, far too early, rush of blood, schoolboy error - jelly legs and still 30m from the line - died badly to 13th.....3hr:17m for the 80 miles, what a waste! All good fun

Qualified for GB for both events in Albi - but doubtful I'll be going.....back to basics this weekend - probably somewhere up and down a dual carriageway

Finally for my trusty mechanic Mr Kippax think I've found that chainring to take me to the next level (see pics)

[April 2020: Got quire cyclical about this UCI ToC event...quite clearly money making, piss easy to get a "Great Britain" shirt....pretty meaningless, but would be super kudos to get on the podium at World's - but after my Perth experience, really cannot be fussed getting my TT bike modified to UCI standards...]

MAPPERLEY CC 10M TT - Newark Notts - 27th May 2017

14th Overall & 3rd on Standard
A fairly new dual carriageway from Newark to Loughborough, in theory a fast course, but not today! It was so windy there were diehard testers refusing to race....

However, same for everyone or is it?! All top 'normal' National level guys were above 20 mins, but rumour spread that someone had done an 18-30 - couldn't be, impossible in those conditions....but it was true, my first (and not last) encounter with Dan Bigham, the aero king! Amazing ride...

As for me....still struggling for what I expect on the new Trek....very frustrating....

Saturday, 13 May 2017

SHEFFREC CC 10M TT - Hatfield Woodhouse - 13th May 2017

7th Overall / 2nd on Standard / 1st O50
Written retrospectively, cannot recall too much about this...and "my club" 25m, although racing for Langsett Cycles this season - still nothing special, the metamorphism is getting closer though!

For the record knocking out 318 watts for this (typically 330 for a 10m)...but watch this space!
